The knotted forepaws of the lion skin that the hero Herakles wears fastened across his chest. The knot itself is a very common motif in ancient Greek art and stands for the way life and death are interwined, in the same manner that Herakles stood between two worlds as he was born a mortal but turned into an immortal.
